Toya Delazy – Teke

Updated: Sep 3, 2021

Are bonkers blasts of unruly energy ever enough? Even if they only last 1 minute and 40 seconds? Yes, obviously. Look at the Ramones, people were sceptical at first but within a matter of decades, they were responsible for over 50% of the world’s t-shirt sales. That’s a success story based on unruly blasts.

I predict a similar trajectory for Toya Delazy. In fact, some parts of her story are already fairly similar. For example, the Ramones played gigs in London and quadrupled their fanbase. Toya Delazy actually moved to London and has been producing bangers ever since, admittedly her career was not exactly in the doldrums beforehand. In 2013 she won three gongs in the South African Music Awards (Newcomer of the Year, Best Pop Album, Best Producer). Also she was brought up as a princess in KwaZulu Natal. That certainly never happened to the other guy (*pick a Ramone). In Delazy’s case, the departure from South Africa seems to have coincided with a renunciation of old pop constraints, complete with a role in Powderpuff Girls. Like so many people, she landed in the big smoke and embraced rave, larging it and dancing with puppets.

So what about Teke? It’s a bit runty like a forgotten Ramone. It doesn’t seem to appear on Toya Delazy’s new album, Afrorave. Maybe all that simple Zarathustra-spraching jump-up lunacy didn’t fit in with the other bits. Or maybe Strauss wanted too much Ghost Wonga for the sample. That’s one of those new Austrian Waltz Cryto-Currencies in case you’re wondering. Weirdly, theory two actually seems more likely, as the album is not radically different from Teke. It’s replete with pure havoc beats and niggly sample grit. Check Funani below for a taster. Then play Teke again. Then twice more. Now your day is kicking off properly.
