Discovering the current existence of an information source called The Face was this week’s blog research surprise. One of those soothing surprises, like slippers in a shoebox marked Nasty Shit. The Face article featured this week’s bloggee, Anz, giving us a guided spin round Manchester’s weekend attractions. Eastern Bloc, a record shop I last visited in 1994, and Finn, an ex-bloggee who appeared last December, both earned themselves mentions, generating yet more frissons of semi-nostalgic cheerfulness. What a pair of mismatched slippers those two are.
Anz’s enthusiam for clubbing, originally in London and now in Manchester, is clear. She champions the smaller city as a good location to get your outlook blended. There’s less pressure to stick in your comfort zone when all the niches are packed up so tight. ‘People might be less inclined to roll to each other’s nights or radio shows if it was a 3.5 hour night tube round trip,’ she says. Talking of radio shows, Anz has her own spot on NTS where you can get a reliable dose of bass, R’n’B, UK funky, breakbeat and electro.
The Face article was from April 2019, so we can assume that levels of Manc larging it have been heavily curtailed since then, with just a very recent resurge. This might help explain a bit of a mini glut going on with Anz recordings. This week’s tune Real Enough To Feel Good came out three weeks ago. Meanwhile, another earlier track, the gleaming electro-soul gem, You Could Be, is currently on rotation as part of the BBC Radio 6 playlist. Thoroughly deserved rotation, but our focus is on the less-songish, more dancefloor, Real Enough To Feel Good. It’s got a pure UK Garage clappy groove, with occasional beat rushes. There’s a slight queasiness to the vocal snippets to let you know it’s serious night time music. And keys and bass come sliding up to each other, before stepping back to give us some space. Enough to convince you to ditch the slippers, and remind yourself what it’s like to go out.
