Listening to Woody Guthrie wasn´t a huge craze in the eighties but Billy Bragg did it, so how does it feel now, when he listens to Milkman Of Human Kindness, and notices the patina of Guthrie-ish allure that the passing of time has deposited? Milkmen leaving pints must seem as distant as carpetbaggers bagging carpets to some listeners. Maybe even as distant as that bit in the Iliad when Penelope pays for a Findus Moussaka with Green Shield stamps.
This patina talk is inspired by The Lovely Eggs, because when I listen to some of their stuff I think, B-Movie Fuzz. Quite how the B-movie aesthetic means anything is not clear. B-Movies were long gone by my time, and hardly around in my continent, but it´s a handy concept. Or maybe that´s a lazy concept. It´s certainly a tidy way to sum up some Lovely Eggs stuff – photos posing with giant tin foil cutlery for example, or wobbly space travel chat and animation, or gaudy fonts, or an urge to really really entertain, but maybe without entertaining everybody.
Coincidentally, more ancient ´B´ concepts come to play with Dum Dum Boys, because in the old days we would call it a B-side, as it´s been released alongside I,Moron, a song that is destined to win more attention, what with its video, an its guest star, Iggy Pop. Dum Dum Boys is one of Iggy´s old tracks, re-fuzzed and fluffed, re-vived like a papier maché monster who´s had new eyebrows glued on for his latest appearance. I, Moron definitely deserves some listening time (also the video is brilliant) but for blog purposes, I´m sticking with Dum Dum Boys, as the simple woozy chords grabbed me. And then grabbed me again and again.
