The City by Jockstrap (off the Wicked City EP)

Opening a blog is a challenge so I might as well start with Jockstrap. Why? For a start, I heard this song, ´The City,´ on Spanish Radio 3 this week, and incredibly this means that Jockstrap have been on Radio 3 more than ´Macarrones pop,´ the new track by Spain´s greatest camp party duo, Ladilla Rusa.
That´s quite a leap in exposure, and my first attempted explanation involved singer Georgia Ellery´s eye-catching appearance in Bait, the Cornish trawling v touring film which Everybody has been adding to their lockdown sofa watchlists. But then I noticed the new EP is on Warp, so that could be why Radio 3 are getting on board.
My Bait theory has consequently been downgraded.
During my first exposure to Jockstrap I facetiously lodged them in the category Filth, because I was watching the video to I Want Another Affair (Taylor Skye Remix) and it features some ambiguous leather furniture frot scenes. Also, let´s not forget that they are called Jockstrap. Later Filth got adjusted to Posh Filth, mainly because of the line, “That Foie Gras didn´t come from Narnia, y´know,” delivered in emphatically un-Winstonish tones.
Now it´s time to talk about The City - Have Jockstrap stuck with the template of sweet pop vocals, queasy off-pop synths, contra-pop diversions and foggily fun lyrics? It´s complicated because in April they released The City where the answer was no, or more accurately, not until 2 and a half minutes in. That track leads in with an actual piano sound, bucolic nostalgia for urban stuff plus singing turned up to advanced level pitching. Then we get proper Jockstrapped with the arrival of drums, bass splats and vocal snatches, all of which possibly represent a transfer from city thinking to city living. As for Filth, an abundance of beaver talk maintains the relevance of their mucky pigeon holing. Grubby kicks abound in the city.
