Sault – London Gangs

Unlike those old-fashioned newspapers that you occasionally hear people reminiscing about, Blogs are not much known for providing Massive Scoops. Well, this week that mould will get bashed as I have a scoop about a band. Not just any band either, it’s the most mysterious band operating right now, Sault. There may be other bands with no pictures or names on their sleeves but nobody matches Sault for mysteriousness, every time you google them, it says something about how mysterious they are. Such blanket recognition their of invisibility can’t have come easily, but that’s no reason not to poke a hole in the blanket and let a nose-shaped beam of light in, so here comes the scoop. I used to work with A Brother Of One Of Sault (known as ABOOOS from this point on).

In answer to the inevitable questions, Yes, it was in Tesco actually. In Chelmsford, in about 1987. I was frozen food and ABOOOS was shopfloor, meaning he got a blazer whereas I was done up in a white coat. I did have access to an insulated freezer coat though. So come off it ABOOOS, give that misplaced sense of superiority a rest.

I sense giant mind-blown emojis hoving into view, so let’s go down a notch and talk about London Gangs. It’s a tight, beguiling blend of funk and post punky drive. When the title gets dished out just a microbeat off where you might expect it, you get pulled into the momentum, and it doesn’t relinquish it’s grip. After the little la-la-la build, you half expect a pause but there it is again, London Gangs, on top of you. Vocalist, Cleo Sol, got a mention in the blog two weeks ago as she did such a great job on Little Simz’ Woman. Here it’s a less soulful vibe, and a mournful mix of pride and danger, even despair, haunts the lyrics. The production cuts back on fuss while maintaining atmosphere. It’s certainly no scoop that Cleo Sol is a great singer and Sault are great band, boasting an output of outstanding quality and depth. All the energy they save by having no profile, they apparently devote to just being great at making music. Well done Sault, and also Hello ABOOOS, long time no see (and which aisle is the bog roll again?)
