Autobus FM is one of those curiousities that looms large in my musical imagination while meaning nothing at all beyond the cosy confines of my marriage. Basically, it´s an imaginary radio station that provides music for all buses running within the Iberian peninsula. A fairly atypical bit of playlisting soundtracks my number one Autobus FM memory, it´s listening to Lady In Red while pulling into Castro Urdiales station. Upbeat pop of any variety is generally what´s expected, with a very fine dusting of ballads. Beach Pop might sum up this style well, while added folk forays turn up within the sub-genre Post Beach Pop. This has been invented by the bus folk of Galicia (just like Tortoise invented Post Rock and Christoph Gluck invented Post Baroque) as a reaction to those 10pm July sunsets that give return trips a night-time rather than tea-time vibe.
Guitars turn up in Beach Pop, but they have to be directed cleanly with minimal fuss, which gets Matt Maeson and Lana Del Rey on board. If you were staring out towards the sea while your bus overtakes a car with a badge that has the word Classic stamped on it, you would have an idea of how classic this track sounds. I was pushed to wonder whether people who make things this classic-sounding actually try to sound classic, or it just happens like that. This lead to an internal Classic Nature v Classic Nurture debate.
While wondering away like that, I also thought of a saying they might have out on the West Coast. It goes - You can give us some full-on campfire riffs, just so long as you tell us your unwholesome lifestyle tics. On Autobus FM you can´t get banned regardless of your intake, which is lucky because Hallucinogenics is about drugs. Obviously. One doubt about the revelations in the lyrics was just how often Maeson mentions burning his arm. It´s the chorus, I understand that, but is he being a bit of a bore? Do you think Del Rey was tempted to throw in an impromptu, ´Didn´t anything better happen while you were off your tits?’ Of course not, makers of classic sounds don´t go down that road.
