Grab your vaccination visas etc because this time we’re doing a song dash, with a purely continental slant. First up, it’s Marie Davidson, whose had a mention or two before, but now she’s getting lead billing with the Morgan Geist remix of Worst Comes To Worst. Two bold reflected piano riffs were enough to elevate her to top spot. A technical analysis of Geist’s tweaks as remixer would be logical here, but instead here’s some psychology. Evidence suggests that some people fall victim to a synaptical judder simply from seeing his name on a track. And yes, I’m one of those people. Not that the actual sound of his tweaks is irrelevant, he’s a master of relevant tweaks. I just don’t want to waste time writing about them, listen to his tweaks guys! There’s acid bits and everything. Plus it’s Morgan Geist.
You probably won’t have heard of Mecano, but we’re nipping across to Spain now, where they are a household name, kind of like a Madrileño Spandau Ballet, but on the next level, where the next level is a stage show. The Mecano musical has played in Spain and Mexico, and has had more that 1,500,000 visits. That’s how things progress if you don’t have a Spanish Duran Duran trouncing you at every turn. Now, Mecano’s singer, Ana Torroja, has teamed up with local, indie-ish stalwarts, Miss Caffeina for an inter-generational effort, Punto Muerto. It’s as catchy as Covid and more frivolous than cancer. Boasting a gently epic tug through the verses, the chorus hints at drama on a tectonic scale,
Torres más altas cayeron,
Barcos más grandes se hundieron,
Guerras más largas, crueles llegaron a algún punto muerto.
The tallest towers fall, the biggest ships sink,
The longest, cruellest wars reach a biting point.
I’m no expert, but it wouldn’t sound out of place at Eurovision. At least, that’s what somebody said in the YouTube comments, and those guys know their stuff, although wouldn’t it have to be partly in English? If so, I’m available for translation duties.
Now back to France, because Charlotte Adigéry is back, with the slow burning Bear With Me. Adigéry turned everything upside down in 2019 when she released High Lights. No massive shock occurred when it was widely acknowledged as the greatest ever song about wigs, what caused ructions was realising that it was also better than all the songs about real hair put together. Undeniable ruction alert. Bear With Me’s hooks have a more insidious creep about them, or is it a glide? Her vocals cut across an orchestral sweep, while the bass pins you down. It’s slightly chilling fun.
Finally, here’s Hématome bu L’Impératrice, also from France. Rather stupidly, I assumed that Hématome would be the French equivalent of something like Moonlight, Crossroads or Lovesick Poodle, one of those classic song titles, but then I realised that Hématome in English is Hematoma, a benign case of bleeding outside the blood vessels, for example a bruise. A more perceptive blogger would have noticed from the video that elaborate themes were being addressed over the elegant cocktail r’n’b backing. So apologies. What I have noticed is a certain jarring awkwardness lurking within all the skilled and crafty musicianship, blocking the Gallic rudder’s tendency towards anaemic yacht rock tributes. Keep that rudder blocked, ‘cos that’s the end of the Euro dash, the brown flats of Maldon have appeared, and we’re back in the land of barge rock.
