Ladyhawke and BROODS – Guilty Love

Similarities between being in heaven and looking at your Facebook feed have not been much explored, so now seems like a good time to give them a look. Picture the scene, you’re on the podium, about to receive an Olympic gold medal, and naturally you think, I bet my Grandma’s looking down on me right now. She must be so proud. Parallel thoughts probably don’t occur while you´re on the toilet. Just as your FB posts are more likely to celebrate your long jump triumphs than your long dump deposits. So, there you go, proof that our absent loved ones are spending eternity scrolling downwards through friends and family titbits, in search of emotion, or diversion at the very least.

Which brings us to shame, which is today’s theme, those things you keep away from the public eye, or would prefer Grandma not to know about. The chosen focus because Ladyhawke’s Guilty Love is our song and it’s based on just those feelings, the ones the priest told you weren’t acceptable upstairs. Lesbian lust is the specific example in the video but I’m sure we could come up with some others if we put our mucky minds to it. The song came about during a writing session between Ladyhawke, the BROODS’ Georgia Nott and Tommy English. They realised that they shared a Roman Catholic upbringing, and then mined their common experiences for song fuel. As Nott puts it, “we talked about growing up religiously and how we carried a lot of shame around the idea of what a woman (or person) should be. This song is about that but also about finding our own way back to a sense of spirituality through love. The love that once caused so much guilt, ended up being the most healing and spiritual. END CONVERSION THERAPY EVERYWHERE!”

What´s that? It´s a blast of semi glam drums which tells us the preamble ends here, and the track is kicking off. Now it´s leading us into a bass led verse,

Think I’ve got a hangover from one sip of wine

Still losing the feeling from my knees down at times

Who is it for? Because it isn't for me

………..then hitting a pre – chorus tease,

And every time I pray, I just pray to be free

....that sets us up for that high impact two word chant, Guilty Love, Guilty Love, with guitar lines cut back to an elegant minimum as we finish up with a dive into love contradictions,

You’re my new religion and I’m never gonna give you up.

It’s neat songwriting and it certainly hits home. Ladyhawke has some impeccable indie connections, Tim Burgess for example, or Peaches. Given that BROODs have toured with Ellie Goulding, Haim, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith and Tove Lo, it’s no surprise that this is indie pop that refuses to hide from craft, or melodic finesse. There are edgy moments in the track, but all put to the service of the song.

Has the guilt in Guilty Love lost its power in heaven, as it has on FB? Authorities are divided on this point. What we do know is that, happily and thanks to a ton of struggles, the dark shames of earlier generations have been illuminated, the heaven feed is a mystery, but modern living lets most of us take pride in all sorts of fun and feelings, making Guilty Love a celebration as well as a commentary.
