Bands, just like people, have faced either more or less ill-timed obstacles from Covid. Not that well-timed global pandemic blows exist, just that there are degrees of fortune to be found in every impact.
I´d put Ladilla Rusa down as a group who took a badly-timed blow. Last year they firmly enthroned themselves as Spain´s top Camp Party Band (With A Wry Line In Commentary On Sexual Politics & Popular Culture), mainly thanks to radio smash KITT Y Los Coches Del Pasado, the ear-conquering, tecno-rumba account of a car enthusiast who is revealed as cross-dressing weekender in a final verse drenched in emotion.
Let´s assume that the plan for 2020 was to monetise all that glittery success with gigs. And yes I know, they did manage to slip in shows like the Arzúa cheese fiesta back in February, but surely that was supposed be a vermouth hour nibble rather than the main course. It should have been the springboard to a summer full of flights, adventures, costumes changes, all soundtracked with the ringing of the merchandising stand till. Instead, it´s been all masks and a few months of dog walks as the definition of luxury. What must go on turns out to be schools and offices, not shows at all, so that particular saying wins the world-beating red herring award.
It takes more than pandemics to stop Ladillas though, so here we are with a new track, dedicated to love in the time of the Corona. Is A Un Metro Y Medio De Ti (Or in English, A Metre & A Half Away From You) the first lockdown love song? Probably not, back in June we David McAlmont making the periscope life sound so soulful on McHifi´s Bunker To Bunker. This time it´s a vision of eyes and a forehead that sets the heartstrings in motion, while distance and prudence try to put on the brakes. It´s just that supermarket crushes, just like synth pop vibes, can´t be stopped. The living room disco must go on, along with YouTube views, TV slots and blog posts. If there´s one thing missing, it´s cash. As the merchandising till is keeping it´s mothball mask on, I´m posting the link to the new album´s crowdfunding site here:
