Kelly Lee Owens - Corner Of My Sky (feat. John Cale)

Despite my allotmenteering tendencies, I don’t harbour great fondess for the refrain, ‘The rain, the rain, the rain, thank God the rain.’ This is as close as you get to a chorus in Corner Of My Sky. For me, the late night watering of arid ground has been a pleasure during the last few months and also I don´t much fancy looking back at this summer, one devoid of your classic activities, going to the beach for example, or traveling. On the plus side, there´s been a lot of wearing shorts, but also wondering what´s next, and also vainly hoping that what´s next might kick in while the weather is nice. In other words, rain is not the change I´ll be thanking anyone for.

Corner Of My Sky is full of small changes, they are layered over a repetitive bleepy rhythm, and made of bass grumbles, semi-organic sweeps and some stringy type business. It´s that avant garde minimal sound but with a natural lyrical tone that sits well as the repetition suggests seasons, months, weeks or just days, ´I´ve lost the bent that words will come, and wake me in the morning,´ intones Cale towards the end, or something like that. I may need my ears unclogged.

After Owens sent the track to John Cale to get his contributions, she was apparently blown away with what he delivered. The vocals work great as he cuts across the descending lines and then throws in some parts in Welsh, which lend extra gravitas and mystery (at least to me). It´s a little perverse that music humming with electricity has such a bucolic core, but clouds hoard volts too sometimes, and they are rustic as fuck.
