Francophilia normally gets counted as a virtue, but what about full on sneaky, cheating Francophilia? There´s a case of it right here. Sarkozy himself might balk at the levels of underhandedness about to be perpetuated. If you feel a surprising hypothetical Gallic blush coming on, you´re dead right, but who to hand it to? Let´s dish it out to John the Fearless, an early 15th century tyrant who kept his scruples tightly rolled up in a discarded snail shell. Yes, he would have blushed when word reached him of the following…..I´m going to do New Song blog about an oldish track, my excuse being that it has just reappeared with a French rap remix.
Blame it all on Oboy. The French rapper has been recruited to hit the studio, put on Come Over by Jorja Smith, and lay down a fresh verse or two (I was tempted here to write deux, but then I remembered that such French inserts are a stale stunt much used by Telegraph columnists). This set in motion the scandal outlined above, like the stalwart locomotive, La Lison, from Zola´s La Bête Humaine, easing out of the station in Le Havre, building momentum, and ending up with its blood stained pistons rattling in thin air.
Get Over first came out in October, boasting dancehall rhythms and a chorus whose simple sentiment,
I don´t know if you want me to come over
…..was perfectly matched to its direct, unfussy melody. I was smitten but neglected to include it in the blog, partly due to competition among rival tracks, but also thanks to a niggling concern that it had tipped a little into the ´Too Catchy´ category. Thankfully, Oboy was on hand to step in, with this new mix and his rap, so here I am, sneaking it in. Like John the Fearless sneaking himself into the power vacuum left by the demise of King Charles VI, his demented cousin (cousin dement for the Telegraph contingent).
The song was straining before, eager to form the next arch in the reggae hit viaduct that stretches from Rupie Edwards to Janet Kay to Chaka Demus, but now the pressure is off, it´s the next inflatable in the French rap pontoon bridge, made up of MC Solaar and Shurik´n. Suddenly, that chorus is a third element, and it´s free to let its ear worming get done gradually, seeping in without overwhelming the victim. Flipping this civil engineering imagery, it´s like French rapping has let some of the air out of the tyres, and now Come Over rolls cheerfully under a bridge, or an ornate arch, the one that leads to blogworthy territory. Now I´m certain that I want it to come over.
