Barely a day goes by without somebody asking me, “What would A.R. Kane sound like if they were doing stuff now?” Obviously, that´s a lie. Even I didn´t ask the question until I had two answers in the pipeline. Answers that both came to me via Jamz Supernova´s show on Radio 1Xtra, a favourite of mine as it takes you on a smooth trip from Essexy soul to Aphexy abstraction. I´m also quite tickled that basically nobody – not Jamz Supernova herself or the people involved in her show, not those involved in the tracks in question, nor hardly anyone involved in anything else for that matter – knows who A.R. Kane are. These are those young people you hear about, and they don´t need to listen to ancient 4AD or Rough Trade releases to do their own brilliant stuff.

Choosing which of those two modern day A.R. Kane equivalents to make prime blogee was not easy. I´ve gone with Jamal Bucanon because his profile appears to be low. Not even a Facebook page, and some people´s hamsters have one of those. Actually, scrap that, I´ve just noticed that his track, Waved, has been chosen as Chillest Record for Phil Taggert´s Radio 1 show. How´s that for profile? Anyway, it was the vocals on Waved, that really caught me with the A.R. Kane thing at first, setting up a dream pop/ r´n´b vibe before things come to a head with junglish clatter breaking out all over. I guess it sounds like one of those days when you´re drifting along until things take a different path, and you end up getting waved. The waves you give when saying goodbye to yesterday´s regrets, just before you run off to welcome tomorrow´s. We´ll call that a young person´s prerogative.

Second choice, Actress, couldn´t be more different profile-wise. He has more profile than you can wave a Wikipedia entry at. He´s done more or less everything, DJing at house parties in Wolverhampton, making techno tracks for Soma records, recording with Damon Albarn in DR Congo, running a label in conjunction with Ninja Tune, getting snapped my Lord Snowdon and Wolfgang Tillmans, and now this…a track with Sampha. Can I get away with recycling my new drifty dream pop/ r´n´b vibe from a minute a go? Because that´s what it has, all over it. Sampha gives a subdued glimpse of brave days or maybe new days, while the background melody apes the noises of our phones when they sing their favourite little tunes. It really is beautiful.
