Duncan Gray – Punish (Acid Mix)

After watching Wes Anderson´s animation feature, Isle Of Dogs, a friend commented that she thought the director should stick to stop-motion from now on. The implication being that the pure toil of getting everything drawn had curbed his indulgent instincts, in a way that pointing cameras at actors had failed to. Technology´s limitations can give extra focus to work, and I imagine the origins of acid house were a bit like that. Early programming must have thrown up enough obstacles to discourage excessive adornments, making it a great niche for the display of ungilded lilies.

35ish years since Acid Trax, simplicity is still a virtue when 808s or 303s are at work and that´s what I adore about the Acid Mix of Duncan Gray´s Punish. As well as a friend, Duncan is also a DJ who trots the globe pandemics allowing, and put aside his natural Sloughphilia to tell me that Albania, Marseille and Australia are the best places to DJ. Apparently the Acid Mix is one of three mixes of Punish, it´s the simplest and we agree that it stands out as a result. The key is that each part is done so well, from the driving gurglings to the soothing buzz wash. Plus the beats. Eager listeners should move on to Duncan´s album too, The Malcontent Vol 2, where things veer over into melody, counterpoint and he occasionally let´s rip with that overwhelming urge to be ´a bit prog.´

Also, I should point out that Punish comes from a compilation, Galactic Service Broadcasting Vol 2, put together by Viscera as a fund-raiser for Shelter UK. A timely reminder that creative types have time to devote to being generous, giving people, as well as ensuring that the UK is something much more significant than just a boiled-down, cash-driven, anaemic nostalgia dump.
