Faced with months of inactivity, what´s the best thing a band can do? 4 months into global pandemic I think Japanese girl group CHAI have provided the answer – it´s their version of a Chemical Brothers B-side seemingly plonked out on bits of living room furniture. This is basically what I imagine I would have done if Corona virus had broken out in 1988, except it would have been a Kitchens of Distinction b-side, and it would have been much much less watchable or musical.

But now CHAI have moved to the next stage, which involves teaming up with Spanish girl group Hinds, so that´s two girl groups teaming up for a kind of girl group or girl fan manifesto. Hinds are a fine choice for this as they have a great ear for playfulness, plus vocal and production quirks. If you haven´t heard their blows-a-thousand-holes-in-Spanish-radios hit, Good Bad Times, then you are seriously missing out.

They might have been tiny lemondrop-shaped twinkles in 16 future parents´ eyes back when c86 came out but heavily indie is an apt way to describe all this, in mindset at least, but with occasional techno(ish) layers instead of jangle upon jangle. There is something about Girl Band Rock´n´ Roll Club which seems to be channelling all the best things about home-made, cut and paste culture, for one thing you don´t have to worry about good taste, or pretending that coolness or maturity beat fun. So let´s consider the freedom that allows.

Come with us to a radical place

……they sing, a place where catchy choruses drown out boring allegations of naffness. Where messages can be wrapped up in enthusiasm rather than inscrutable metaphor. It might even be a place where people believe The Bollweevils are better than Jane´s Addiction. I´ve just noticed something about this place, it´s a place where CHAI have tons of fans. It´s a real place, I mean, for lots of people. How incredibly cool is that?
