Baxter Dury – Say Nothing (Wrongtom Dub)

In the pantheon of great football chants, there must be some dark alcove where they keep the most obscure ones, like this;

No more than 10 people have probably ever heard this, but I suspect it occasionally haunts every one of them. With me, it usually pops up when I´m listening to Baxter Dury. He does such a good job of speaking East London. With a voice where melodiousness has been traded for profound grizzle, plus the stately orchestration and the choral backing vocals, it seems almost like we have a re-located Leonard Cohen. But as well as Cockney Cohen, there´s hints of Galleywood Gainsbourg, the Tiptree Tindersticks and the Leyton Orient Love Unlimited Orchestra. This is basically a dream line up – marauding the A12 for kicks.

So why chose Wrongtom´s remix of Say Nothing? Because London-talk over reggae settings is another dream. It reminds me a bit of a huge personal favourite, Launderette by Vivien Goldman, a track where mundane love chores are lifted by a loose semi-skank that feels absorbed rather than added. An acknowledgement that irie feelings seep into UK life, with no need for jarring gear changes or special announcements.

While Gainsbourg is sitting here along with irie feelings, I need to do a quick plug for the new track by Spanish group, The Limiñanas. It´s called Calentita and can be boiled down to this; Spanish food favourites listed over a Bonny & Clyde style strumalong, with other French stuff too – all until someone mentions (spoiler alert) marijuana. It´s pointless but really really captivating.
