Basside – Crazy Expensive

Not all bloggers have lists of potential song (or anything) titles hidden away, but the ones that do should exploit them. So here´s one of mine, Even Perverts Picnic. It might be a decent album track, or in more fanciful moments, it can be pictured as one of those short stories than gets adapted into a humungous multi-million grossing film, like Brokeback Mountain, but less geologically imposing.

The secret of this title´s indisputable appeal is its combination of seemingly incongruous elements, the wholesome Picnic and the toothsome Perversity. Today´s blog is going to be similar as we have to incorporate references to the recent, sad passing of ex-bloggee SOPHIE along with lyrics like New York to Miami, no bras, no panties.

Basside are a Miami Bass due, Caro Loca and Que Linda, who have been performing live since 2015. Their connection to SOPHIE began in 2016 when she invited the pair to lay down tracks in her LA studio. She was among the DJ faces (like A.G. Cook, Charlie XCX, Machinehead) who then included the tracks in their sets.

Crazy Expensive appears on the new Fuck It Up EP, which was all produced by SOPHIE and includes her remix of NYC2MIA from their original 2017 EP. This is the one with the underwear troubling lyrics quoted above. Both the beats and words on Crazy Expensive have a similarly direct impact. Electro rhythms that don´t relent once your locked in, and chant style singing that won´t stand for discussion - know your self-worth, all right, and cut the excuses. Actually, that makes it sound too much like a wellness brochure. It´s more like this is MY self-worth, and it´s not measured in smelled flowers. It´s irresistible, funny, intoxicating and rude.

My dress, and my shoes You know I ain't sipping on bottom shelf booze

Discussing the timing of the release and SOPHIE´s death, Que Linda told the Miami New Times, "The passing of Sophie made us realize that time is short and we shouldn't wait any longer. We also wanted to give a gift to everyone that's heartbroken." Two fine reasons to get your stuff out on show.

Finally, some gossip. It turns out that Que Linda is the younger sister of Debbie D from Avenue D, who lit up the noughties with their takes on unfiltered bass and frankness, not to mention unfiltered base frankness, Do I Look Like A Slut? And 2 Drunk 2 Fuck. If you´ve noticed any tinglings of nostalgia for 2004, check out the Extras below.
