Badsista feat. Brisa Flow

All those semi-vacant months ago when lockdown first kicked in, The Guardian recommended DJ Badsista’s Dummy Mix 579 as one of its This Month´s Best Mixes. It was an absolute treasure, and served as my soundtrack to the first two weeks of soviet vibe supermarket visits and static-bike-in-the-garage sessions. It’s a brilliant mix, with a neat blend of rawness and precision, beats and melody. More than anything, the programming stands out as vocal house, baile beats, live guitar, hit snippets and jazzy bits all rub along nicely without you ever questioning their compatibility.

Badsista’s DJ track record speaks for itself, with tons of gigs in her home country, Brazil, backed up with those European ventures that catch our eyes, not to mention trips to Uganda and Australia. There´s also her history of defending LGBTQ+ rights against the Bolsonaro administration´s ´proudly´ homophobic policies, plus her connections with Linn de Quebrada, Brazil´s most famous trans performer and star of the award-winning documentary Blixa Travesty – you know the one, it raised eyebrow or two on Celebrity Gogglebox last week.

So it´s not hard to see something defiant about the track, ´Besamé´ ( that´s Kiss Me in English), we are on Standing In The Way Of Control territory here. It´s that pop and love defiance though, that does its work with inviting backing vocals, squelchy bass and humping beats, all standing up for romantic rights. Brisa Flow´s lyrics are Portuguese with snatches of Spanish and English, the word ´misery´ for example which pops up enough to suggest that this dalliance is not plain sailing. I can only really make out ´´Talvez te amo de llejos mañana” – Maybe I´ll love you from a distance tomorrow. A message that we have to make the most of this right now.
